John Tuohy is a Connecticut-based guitarist, educator, and recording artist who has spent more than two decades building a career across performance, teaching, and creative work. Equally at home on stage, in the classroom, and in the recording studio, he has pursued a path shaped by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a belief that music is best understood by actively engaging with it. Whether teaching college students, performing professionally, developing new theatrical works, or creating original music, Tuohy brings the same curiosity and commitment to each aspect of his work.
Over the past two decades, Tuohy's career has developed less through a predetermined path than through following opportunities that interested and challenged him. That path has taken him through original music, professional theater, recording, teaching, and other collaborative work, with each experience adding something to the musician and educator he has become.
That varied career has also played an important role in Tuohy's work as a teacher. He currently teaches applied guitar and bass lessons and directs the jazz combo at CT State Naugatuck Valley, in addition to teaching guitar at the Norwalk Conservatory of the Arts. He is also the founder of 338 Music LLC, where he teaches privately and works on recording and production projects. His teaching is grounded in a simple philosophy: meet students where they are, communicate clearly, and help them develop the skills and confidence to become independent musicians. His approach emphasizes understanding first, followed by direct application, repetition, and the development of strong technical and musical foundations.
Tuohy's work as an educator also extends beyond the classroom. He has delivered nearly 200 public lectures on American popular music for arts groups, assisted living facilities, and community organizations. Blending discussion with live musical demonstrations and curated audio and video examples, the presentations are designed to engage audiences regardless of their musical background or experience. The series reflects his interest in helping people better understand music and discover their own ways of engaging with it.
Alongside his work as an educator, Tuohy's longest-running musical project has been Mile Marker Zero. As guitarist and songwriter, he has spent more than two decades writing, recording, and performing original music with the band. Throughout that time, Mile Marker Zero has remained the creative thread running through his career—a constant source of challenge, collaboration, and personal fulfillment. The band's work has led to studio albums, performances throughout the United States, and music placements in video games including Rock Band and NASCAR Heat 4. It has also brought coverage in music publications and online media, ranging from in-depth feature interviews to critical album reviews that have followed the band’s releases over time. Along the way, the band has collaborated with other artists within the progressive rock community. For Tuohy, its greatest significance has always been the opportunity to continue to create original music.
His professional performance work has also taken him into musical theater as well as a wide range of collaborative settings. He has worked with ACT of Connecticut, including on the development of Almost Famous with Tony Award–winning composer Tom Kitt prior to the production becoming the fully licensed version of the musical. He also participated in the developmental workshop of Gavin Creel’s Walk On Through at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center and its industry presentation at Signature Theatre in New York, and performed at Carnegie Hall with composer Brian Perri. His work has also included recording and session projects as well as commercial performances, all of which have contributed to his experience as a working guitarist.
Tuohy is currently pursuing graduate study in music at Southern Utah University, building on knowledge gained through years of professional experience while expanding the teaching opportunities available to him.
Throughout a career that has taken him in many different directions, curiosity has remained a constant. Whether in the classroom, on stage, or in the studio, Tuohy continues to look for opportunities to learn, create, collaborate, and deepen his understanding of music.
